All my life, I've been taught to work hard and try my best. But yesterday, I was reading an interview with a guy who said his advice to young people is to not set high goals and to let opportunity come to them. So which is it?

I think that quote is a bit mis-leading. Basically, yes, let the opportunitys come, but you have to put the work in, such that when the opportunity arises, one is primed to take advantage and excell.
I was taught to set attainable goals and work my ass off because the opportunites won't come to you unless you try the best you can.
Eh, it's all in who you know anyway. Someone less qualified is going to get the job instead of you because they were in a fraternity together, or he's the guy's cousin. As Homer Simpson says, “Bart, never try to do anything. You’ll just fail!”

Me did the work hard and achieve goals for most of me life. When me hit me official mid-life, me thought me was way ahead of game. Now, me am unemployed and living in cave. Me not think me am qualified to talk about this.
