Straight dope on New York?

Meeting run-down: I switched out the red sweater for a gray one. Curled my hair. Wore mascara. And you know what? It went well. Eric (the reporter who accompanied me), my source and I talked about the real estate markets in New York and Memphis. I ordered sole piccata, only later finding out sole is on the Seafood Watch overfished list. Eh, it was good anyway. :)

My source lives in Brooklyn and said Paul and I should call him when we're there. He said he'd take us out and show us the sights in New York. Maybe I'll take him up on it.

I traveled quite a bit growing up, although I've never left North America. I've been to something like 25 states and Canada (Looong road trip. Twice.), but I've never actually stayed in New York City. This presents a problem, because I don't know what to do in New York. We're going to see a couple of Broadway shows and probably the Met and MoMA. Maybe Ellis Island.

I've got two books: The Unofficial Guide to New York City and Frommers NYC Free & Dirt Cheap. But they're a total of, like, 700 pages. Surely at least one of you has a suggestion of a fab restaurant, cool but not super-crowded site, or a great place to shop.

So let 'er rip.

Kate, here are some places I like:

(1) Midtown Comics (www.midtowncomics.com) is worth a visit. There are two locations: Midtown Comics Times Square, 200 W 40th Street (Corner of 7th Avenue) and Midtown Comics Grand Central,
459 Lexington Avenue (Corner of 45th Street). Hours and more info on their website.

(2) Virgin Megastore at Times Square is cool too, if you want to browse music.

(3)Toys R Us, Times Square. If you're at Virgin, TRU is just across the street, so you may as well go inside. Ferris wheel in the store!

(4)Toy Tokyo (http://toytokyo.com) 121 2nd Ave # 2F, New York, NY 10003. It's just off Broadway. Sort of expensive, but the store is like a museum of Japanese toys. Fun to look through if you're in the area.

(5) Strand bookstore (www.strandbooks.com) "18 miles of books." They aren't kidding. Well organized, and one could browse there for hours.

(6) Josie's (http://josiesnyc.com). Five different restaurants in the city. We ate at Josie's East last when we were up there last week. Great food, very fresh. Browse menus on their site.

(7) American Museum of Natural History (www.amnh.org). Central Park West at 79th St. Wow, this place is big. Weather permitting, that puts you at Central Park. Stroll around a bit. Look at the Dakota (W 72nd St), home of John and Yoko (and Rosemary's Baby!). Impressive structure.

(8)SoHo neighborhood is fun to visit (www.nyctourist.com/soho1.htm).

Check out www.nyctourist.com. The official guide to NYC tourism. You'll find tons of things to do there. Have fun!

You should try to see Avenue Q while you're there. It's supposed to be, as the kids say, off the hook.

Funny you should mention that -

You see - Kate introduced me to "The Internet is for Porn." Its an awesome song and i love it. So when i asked for spring break off, we were stuck - what do to. Kate wanted to go to Disneyworld, and i didnt really care where exactly we went, other than i just wanted away for a week.

Then it hit me - LETS GO SEE Avenue Q, and kate was all like "but wait, thats in new york, not florida" then i said - A-HAH, but its not like we wont ever travel again.

Thus, the trip to new york was born.

I recommend the museums. They are all of the shopping that the uber nerd needs. Not that I know from personal experience. I mean, um, my friends had to drag me out of the Met kicking and screaming.....

You should at least give Sam a call. I'm sure he'll want to meet for lunch or something.

And c'mon, no Statue of Liberty? Touristy yes, but it's an American icon in addition to being a 150 tall copper statue made out of copper. What's not to like?
