P365 Day 197: It doesn't count unless they sparkle (and I'm not talking about vampires)

Five sparkly stars. Five sparkly stars, and Paul puts down the controller and says, "I have completed absolutely everything in New Super Mario Bros. Wii." His tone isn't filled with pride or accomplishment. He sounds ... sad.

And I guess you always do when you finish a really good game. I played Final Fantasy XII: Revenant Wings once, put it down for a year, then picked it up and played it again. And Paul and I each played The Legend of Zelda: Phantom Hourglass twice through, back to back. We didn't even wait for it to cool down and seem "new" again.

The five sparkly stars did not come the first time Paul played NSMBW. No, he'd already beaten it once and gotten five stars — but not five sparkly stars. So he erased his file and started over. (Me? I would've saved that sucker for all eternity.) And the second time through, he did it. And it didn't take him long — not nearly as long as it would take me to finish the game even once.

So ... congratulations, Paul. The hours you spent playing video games during your formative years have paid off ... twice.

Now get back to work.

I am tempted to delete and play through again. I can't say enough just how good the game is. Though, once you figure out some of the tricker star coins it just comes down to execution.

Oh - and I got to 99 lives on this play through without using any one of the various easy 1-up methods.

Yeah, I'd never be able to get 99 lives without that third-step-from-the-bottom exploit from NES. (Thanks, devs, for leaving that one in.) :)

Man, I have heard nothing but good things about that game. I was really bummed when I found out it was Wii-only.

I want it so bad. But noOOOoOOOoo, we need to get Mass Effect 2. Boo.

Mass Effect 2?! That is an absolutely terrible choice over Mario Bros.

Here is why:
1.It's is guarunteed to be no fun to watch because it is a single player only game with lots o' words. Who cares.

2. It's produced by EA, who consistently choose to put terrible terrible copy-protection into the PC side of their games. God only knows how Harmonix managed to produce a good game with EA as the publisher (see Battlefield series turning to crap).

3. It will be filled with browns, blacks and shades of grey.

4. Did you know that the main character in Mass Effect 2 is literally hitler?

Here is why Mario Bros is awesome:

1. Up to four players can play cooperatively together. Though honestly, it usually devolves to throwing people into pits (also fun).

2. Just look at those sparkley stars, you won't get that in Mass Effect 2.

3. It's awesome and Mario, how can you say no.

4. You get to save the Princess.

[4. You get to save the Princess.]

... Unless she is in another castle.

Also, I would like to point out "browns, blacks and shades of gray" is referring to a color scheme, not a backwards-ass South Carolinian way of thinking. (Though, seriously, is Hitler in the game?)

I know the lack of online multiplayer has turned off a lot of people to NSMBWii, but the game has seen Massive (capital M) sales. It was the No. 3 best-selling game of 2009, despite a late release date (Nov. 15).

For us (and probably you), buying games comes down 50% to the fun factor and 50% to the price tag, and since we have different tastes in games, I can see why ME2 tops NSMBW on the "to-buy" list.

But I love this game. I'd marry this game. I'd hire this game, even if I knew it would shirk its duties and instead hide in its cubicle all day playing Snood. I donate part of my liver if this game had an incurable disease.

(Oh my. It's late and I'm medicated, so I'm prone to hyperbole and spending money online.)

At least rent it. You can't go wrote with an $8 rental.

I'm such a sucker for this game. Deleted save, restarted.
Going to go for zero mushroom houses per world, sparkly stars, no warping (I beat the game quickly first, so i could get the save at anytime perk).
